New Year, No Home (Yet)

Happy New Year! I know I’m not the only one in disbelief that the year is 2015. Where did 2014 go? For that matter, weren’t we just at 2000?

Knowing that the time is going by so quickly, is its own added pressure for all the things I want to do: find an apartment, learn Hindi, pitch stories, read about ancient Indian history. I can definitely (and shamefacedly say) that my phone leeches away a lot of time. It’s just so hard to resist that blinking red (blue, green) light, calling me so urgently away from whatever I may be doing.

In terms of the first goal … nothing yet. It’s been 21 days since I landed here in Bangalore and I’ve probably seen about 15 apartments. Some are too old, some have no electricity backup, others are too pricey, bad location, security problem, noisy roads. Every single one has an issue, except one. But I want the price to go down. And it hasn’t yet. Maybe it never will and that means moving on to a more extensive search. It’s just very frustrating that It’s been 3 weeks and still no place to call my own. I know I can’t compare it to the NYC search which took all of 3 hours! However, I am very fortunate to have a place to stay with my cousins who have been incredibly welcoming and fun to stay with!

Traditional Kerala meal though not pictured was a fried beef curry. Holy cow, it was so yummy!

Today I’m going to watch a movie called “PK” which has become the highest-grossing Hindi movie so far (this season?). It stars one of the top Bollywood stars, Aamir Khan, and it’s generated some sort of controversy which I’m sure will become clearer once I watch it. The last time I saw a movie in the theatre was in Wyoming (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) which was great since I had the theatre all to myself. I’m not generally a fan of the song and dance filled Bollywood movies. The stupid jokes and unrealistic plot lines irritate me. But I’m sure it will be fun to see this with a room full of people.
